914 Subaru Conversion

May 2005 - 914 turbo??? Yes, we have done it, thanks to Subaru power! Renegade customers have been asking for a new alternative to the Small Block Chevy for years now. Some of the demands were, less weight, better fuel economy, excellent reliability, motor availability, fuel injected, smooth and quiet, and lets not forget affordable. Then, they wanted a variety of power and torque choices, from mild to wild, depending on the application. Well, with qualifications like that, the Subaru motors were a shoe-in.

Over the past four years, we have considered other products from GM of course, Chrysler, VW, Toyota, and we even built a Ford and a Nissan powered Porsche. None of these considerations or attempts fit all the qualifications our customers wanted. Other than fitment, variety of usable motors and availability was the hardest one to meet. With a gas saving at 125 HP, to a race proven, turbo charged 450 HP WRX-STI motors, Subaru was the most logical choice.

The kit development was a very secretive endeavor. The designers, Mike Johnson and Dana Stokes, worked on the finished product for months. After a marathon weekend sprint-to-the-finish, the 914 drove out and has not been back in the shop for major changes since! Head to head, a 250+ HP Subie powered 914 is comparable to our 300HP Chevy V-8 powered conversions! ( pictures )

So here are some of the best aspects of this new addition. Since the Flat Four design of the Subaru motors fit perfectly in the engine bay of a 914, the motor installation requires no cutting of your chassis. (Turbo-charged and intercooled motors require some minor relocation to the turbo and cooler.) The motor is so compact, the transaxle is actually moved forward slightly increasing the weight bias to the front.

Another advantage is the projected power capabilities of the turbo WRX STI motors. Stock they produce roughly 300HP and 300FPT straight out of the box. Reliability is not compromised much before 350HP... and that can be achieved with just a few minor changes.

Gas prices have not been getting cheaper that is for sure... so how about a 300HP turbo 914 that gets over 25MPG? This is really terrific! ( pictures )

Lastly, the availability of the motors that will fit the Renegade cradle and adapter system is truly amazing. Just take a look at this list, compliments of North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club:
